What is an LMS (learning management system)?
A learning management system (LMS) is software that lets an organisation create, deliver, and track training in one place. Instead of emailing slides or running every session in person, you upload courses, assign them to learners, and the system records who started, who finished, and how they scored.
A modern LMS typically handles:
- Courses and lessons — video, documents, slides, and quizzes
- Assignments and deadlines — who must complete what, by when
- Assessments and certificates — test knowledge and issue proof of completion
- Reports — completion rates, scores, and compliance status at a glance
Schools use an LMS for classes and grading; companies use it for onboarding, compliance, and staff upskilling. If you train more than a handful of people regularly, an LMS replaces the spreadsheets and scattered files with a single, trackable system.
