What is an audit trail in an LMS?

An audit trail is the LMS's tamper-resistant log of who did what, and when. For compliance, it's the difference between claiming staff were trained and proving it.

A useful audit trail captures:

  • Course completions — each learner, with date and time
  • Assessment scores — proof of understanding, not just attendance
  • Certificate issuance — when proof was granted, and its validity
  • Assignment history — who was required to take what
  • Key changes — when content or due dates were updated

When a regulator or internal auditor asks for evidence, you produce this record directly from the system. Because it's automatically generated and timestamped, it carries far more weight than manually maintained sheets that could have been edited after the fact. For regulated sectors — finance, healthcare, manufacturing — a solid audit trail is a core reason to move compliance training onto an LMS.
