How do I create an online course?

Building an online course is more about structure than technology. A simple, repeatable process:

  1. Define the objective — what should learners be able to do after the course? Write it in one sentence.
  2. Outline the lessons — break the topic into short, logical modules. Shorter is better (see microlearning).
  3. Create the content — mix formats: a short video, a document, a few slides, and real examples.
  4. Add a quiz — check understanding at the end of each module, not just the course.
  5. Build it in your LMS — upload the materials, sequence the lessons, and set a passing score.
  6. Add a certificate — reward completion and create proof.
  7. Pilot, then publish — test with a small group, fix rough edges, then release.

You don't need to be a designer. Start with one course you already teach in person, move it online, and improve it over time. The first course is always the hardest; the rest reuse the same pattern.
