How do I migrate from Moodle to another LMS?

Migration sounds daunting but follows a clear sequence:

  1. Inventory — list your active courses, users, and groups. Archive anything you no longer run.
  2. Export courses — Moodle exports courses as backup files, and many courses as SCORM packages that a new LMS can import directly.
  3. Export user data — pull your learner list and, where possible, completion records (for compliance history).
  4. Import into the new LMS — upload SCORM courses, bulk-import users, and rebuild any course structure that didn't transfer cleanly.
  5. Run both in parallel briefly — keep Moodle read-only for a few weeks so nothing is lost during the switch.
  6. Cut over — point everyone to the new system and retire Moodle.

A good vendor will help with the import. When choosing, ask whether migration assistance is included — it often is, and it removes most of the risk.
