Why do schools and businesses leave Moodle?
Moodle is capable and open-source, but the reasons people move off it are consistent:
- Maintenance burden — self-hosted Moodle needs a server, security updates, backups, and someone technical to keep it running. That's a hidden, ongoing cost.
- Dated, cluttered interface — learners and instructors often find it harder to use than modern platforms, which hurts adoption.
- Unpredictable total cost — "free" software still costs money in hosting, plugins, and staff time, and it's hard to budget.
- Support gaps — with open-source you're often on your own or paying a third-party partner.
For organisations with strong IT teams, Moodle remains a reasonable choice. But for IT-light SMEs, schools, and NGOs — common in Myanmar — a hosted platform that removes maintenance, modernises the experience, and offers clear pricing and support is usually a better fit.
